What kinds of business consulting are there?

Business consulting is not just one service category; it is usually divided by the part of the business the consultant helps improve. Common types include strategy consulting, which focuses on growth, competition, market entry, and major business decisions; operations consulting, which improves workflows, efficiency, systems, and execution; financial consulting, which can involve budgeting, forecasting, profitability, pricing, and financial planning; marketing consulting, which helps with branding, customer acquisition, positioning, and campaigns; human resources consulting, which covers hiring, training, compensation, structure, and people policies; and IT or technology consulting, which helps businesses choose, implement, or optimize software, data, cybersecurity, and digital systems. These categories align with how management consultants are broadly described by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and how career and consulting guides commonly break down the field.

There are also more specialized forms of consulting depending on the company’s needs. For example, some consultants focus on regulatory compliance, supply chain/logistics, sales, branding, franchising, diversity and inclusion, or specific industries such as health care, nonprofits, or finance. So the easiest way to think about it is: business consulting can cover nearly any important function of a company, but most specialties fall under the major buckets of strategy, operations, finance, marketing, HR, and technology.
