How much does the average business consultant cost?

If you want the clearest “average” number, a good practical benchmark is around $85/hour for small-business consulting from Thumbtack, while Upwork shows a $55 median hourly rate and a typical range of $28–$98/hour for business consultants on its marketplace. Clutch, which focuses more on consulting firms, lists many firms in the $25–$49/hour range, while a broader consultant pricing survey found 39% of consultants charge $100–$250/hour and 19% charge $250–$500/hour. Put together, that usually means budget providers and newer freelancers sit toward the low end, while experienced strategy, operations, or niche specialists are often well above $100/hour.

For budgeting, a small one-time consultation may only cost a few hundred dollars, but a serious business review, growth plan, or operations project is often priced as a fixed project or monthly retainer instead of pure hourly billing. Recent pricing guides place business-consulting retainers commonly in the low thousands per month and up, with broader project fees ranging much higher for complex work, so the total cost depends more on scope and seniority than on the headline hourly rate alone.
